FABULOUS HATS, MINT JULEPS AND RACE HORSES—IT’S THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY!
It’s time for “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” and we couldn’t be more excited! Hands down America’s greatest race, the Kentucky Derby has been run continuously since 1875 and this year is the 149thrunning on Saturday, May 6, at the famous Churchill Downs in Louisville. Horse races take place all day long—and yes you can bet on all of them—but the main event known as the Run for the Roses is the 12th of 14 races with a post time of 5:57 pm CST.
While the Derby is considered one of the most prestigious horse races in the world, fashion at the Derby is just as famous—and hats rule the day! Women (and some men) wear wide-brimmed hats adorned with flowers, feathers, bows and ribbons—it’s your chance to express your creativity and individual style. One of our favorite stores at Lake Martin, A Lotus Connection, has a great selection of hats. We tend to think hats make everything more fun so get your hat today!
Whether you pick your favorite horse based on the name, racing bib colors or the odds, we’ve found two area venues hosting Derby parties that are sure to be a blast!

Derby on the Water at Bluffs Daiquiri Bar
For a more laid back Derby party, head over to Bluffs Daiquiri Bar at Harbor Pointe Marina. The iconic floating bar is hosting a lakeside Derby Watch Party from 11 am to 10pm on May 6. Feel free to don your favorite spring dress and fun Derby hat as prizes will be awarded for best Derby hat. We’re hoping to see some men in seersucker jackets and swim trunks! Bluffs will be serving some Derby inspired specials:
- Mint Juleps—the Derby’s famous cocktail of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint
- Kentucky Hot Browns—a Louisville favorite from the famous Brown Hotel
- Pimiento Cheese Sandwiches—quite simply a staple for every party in the South
We hope your Derby is fantastic whether you party at Storybook Farms, Bluffs or your own dock. Tag us in your photos so we can enjoy the day with you!
