REEL IN THE FUN
Raise your hand if you are overjoyed with the impending arrival of spring. All hands are waving in the air among the Big Fish team—especially those of us who love to fish! Spring brings some of the best fishing on our beloved lake. While Lake Martin is renowned for its fishing year round thanks to crystal-clear water coupled with abundant and diverse species, spring is indeed exceptional for the sport.

Spring Signals Prime Fishing Season
What makes spring so special? As water temperatures warm, fish shake off their winter doldrums much like we’re doing right now. Becoming more active, fish of all types are drawn to shallower waters for spawning. This time of year, we’ve had success catching crappie, bass, and bream especially around spawning beds.
The best thing about fishing at Lake Martin is that it’s accessible to anyone thanks to plenty of public access points. The State of Alabama’s Department of Conservation operates facilities at Wind Creek State Park, Smith Landing on Sandy Creek, Madwind Creek, Kowaliga Creek, and Pace’s Point near Camp Alamisco (maps to these locations).
Lake Martin boasts a diversity of fish species so there’s something for all types and skill levels. The fishing experience appeals equally to casual hobbyists like us and experts. For those pro anglers, there are plenty of fishing tournaments held throughout the year at Lake Martin. The majority of tournaments are at Wind Creek State Park which has a tournament weigh-in station on site.
With almost 900 miles of shoreline and more than 40,000 acres, Lake Martin features a multitude of coves, inlets and islands creating numerous fishing spots. Thanks to Alabama Power which manages and controls Lake Martin, there is an ongoing effort to foster fish habitats using recycled Christmas trees and manmade “bushes” from polypipe. You can download and use Alabama Power’s Shorelines App for maps of fish habitats.
If you are new to Lake Martin, we recommend you hire a fishing guide to help you get to know the lake and be successful in your first outing. Once you’ve figured out where your honey hole is, you can rent a boat from Big Fish Boat Rentals and hit the water!
Once you’ve fallen in love with fishing at Lake Martin, give the team at Big Fish a call to find a honey hole to call home. We’re wishing you the best of luck and remember that a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!
Always keep in mind that there are fishing regulations and limits unique to Lake Martin. Find out the specifics from Bass Online and don’t forget to acquire a fishing license before you head out on a fishing adventure.
